What Is MAP Packaging? Tray, Film and Trial Questions for Buyers

Understand modified atmosphere packaging and the practical questions to resolve before choosing a tray, lidding film and sealing setup.

Novarise Packaging Resources · Updated

Key decisions

  • MAP describes a packaging process, not a tray material.
  • Tray, film, seal and storage conditions must work together.
  • A shelf-life target needs food-specific validation.

What MAP changes in the pack

Modified Atmosphere Packaging, or MAP, changes the atmosphere inside a sealed pack for a selected food application. The gas arrangement is part of a food-packaging process; the tray material name alone does not establish MAP performance.

A buyer should begin with the food producer's requirements. Identify the food, current packing method, storage temperature and intended distribution. Define what the project is trying to achieve before requesting a tray described as MAP-ready.

Review four parts of the system

The food, tray, lidding film and equipment must be considered together. The tray and film need to match the required barrier and seal, while the machine and operating setup must support the chosen pack. The food producer remains responsible for the food process and its safety validation.

Keep sealability and barrier separate

A tray can accept a seal without meeting every oxygen or moisture-barrier requirement. A high-barrier film also cannot compensate for an unreliable seal. Ask what has been assessed for the exact combination rather than interpreting a single descriptive label as complete proof.

Review flange cleanliness, sealing settings, seal continuity and peel behavior in filled-pack trials. Agree how the packed product will be stored and handled during evaluation. Share findings with the food producer and equipment partners before changing any component.

Validate before quoting a storage-life claim

Packaging cannot establish a fixed shelf life independently of the food, process and cold chain. Define the food-specific validation plan with qualified partners. An empty-tray test or a result from another meal is not a substitute for that work.

MAP and vacuum skin packaging, or VSP, are different approaches. VSP uses film that conforms closely around the food. If either process is proposed, confirm feasibility for the selected tray and equipment instead of treating both as interchangeable closure options.

Common questions

Does a MAP-compatible tray guarantee longer shelf life?

No. Shelf life depends on the food, process, complete packaging system and storage conditions and needs appropriate food-specific validation.
