PET and rPET Food Packaging for Chilled Display Applications
Review clear food packs by display conditions, lid fit, anti-fog needs and the material records required for your destination market.

Key decisions
- Evaluate clarity with food in the display environment.
- Specify the container and lid as a matched pair.
- Recycled-content and food-contact questions need separate records.
Review the pack where it will be displayed
Clear PET-family packs are a starting point for salads, fruit, desserts and deli foods where buyers want to see the contents. Review the filled pack under the lighting and storage conditions of the intended display. The height, lid shape, label and food arrangement all affect presentation.
Include the time between packing and purchase in the trial brief. If condensation limits visibility, discuss anti-fog options for the selected format and evaluate them under the actual refrigeration conditions rather than comparing empty packs at room temperature.
Match closure, capacity and handling
Confirm the usable capacity, external dimensions, lid retention and stack arrangement. Check that the pack closes consistently at the intended fill level and that the lid does not press onto the food in an unwanted way. For a sealed format, review the film and equipment requirements separately.
Test the filled pack through carrying, carton packing and the expected distribution route. Fruit, leafy salads and wet deli foods may need different handling or closure requirements even when their portion sizes are similar.
Ask specific questions about rPET
For an rPET project, request the proposed recycled-content specification and the applicable food-contact records. FDA guidance discusses recycled-plastic food-contact suitability in relation to the recycling process and intended use; the word recycled alone is not product approval.
Keep recycled-content documentation separate from a claim that the finished pack is recyclable in a particular market. Ask which body, lid, label or coating components are included in the material description. Use the exact approved specification when preparing customer-facing wording.
Prepare the display packaging brief
A useful brief includes the food type, target portion, storage conditions, closure preference and shelf footprint. Add any label, anti-fog or recycled-content requirement, and identify the destination market and volume by format.
If the consumer will reheat the meal, treat that as a separate material-selection question. Clear chilled-display PET packaging should not be assumed to perform like CPET ready-meal packaging.

Common questions
Does rPET automatically mean the pack is suitable for my food?
No. Request records for the exact recycled-plastic specification, intended food contact and target market.
