Coated Paperboard Packaging: Base Paper, Coating and Print Choices
Specify kraft, bamboo pulp or white card paperboard together with the coating, lid, printing and food-contact requirements.

Key decisions
- Base paper and coating are separate specification choices.
- Capacity, seams and lid fit need filled-pack checks.
- Approve artwork on the selected substrate and format.
Separate the paper base from the coating
Coated paperboard packaging uses a paperboard base and a coating selected for the intended product. Kraft paperboard, bamboo pulp paperboard and white card or SBS paperboard describe base options. PE and PLA describe coating families. These labels answer different questions and should appear separately in a purchasing brief.
State the food, filling conditions and expected contact time before choosing the structure. Cups, bowls and food containers need different capacities, shapes and closures. Appearance can help narrow options, but it does not confirm the performance of a specific coated container.
Review the finished container
Test the finished pack, including its seams, rim and lid arrangement. Record how it behaves when filled, held, carried and opened. Check the usable capacity and fill line rather than relying only on a nominal volume stated in a catalog.
If the product includes a lid, sleeve or printed outer pack, review the assembled system. A lid should be assessed on the proposed container, and a sleeve should be checked for fit and readable artwork after filling and handling.
Approve printing on the actual substrate
Share the logo files, artwork, colors and intended print coverage. Offset and flexographic printing can be discussed according to the product and project. Confirm the chosen method and artwork layout with the supplier instead of assuming a digital mockup predicts the final appearance.
Review a print sample or agreed proof against the selected paper base and format. Keep the approval reference, version and packaging requirements with the order specification. If branding spans cups, bowls and sleeves, define which colors and elements should remain consistent.
Check the scope of material and disposal claims
A kraft appearance or bamboo pulp base does not by itself establish that a coated pack is plastic-free, compostable or recyclable in a particular collection system. The coating, ink, adhesive and other components matter to the finished-product claim.
Ask for the material structure and records appropriate to the food contact and market. A complete inquiry includes paper preference, coating requirements, capacity, closure, artwork, order volume and delivery schedule.
- Base paper and coating preference
- Food contact and filling conditions
- Dimensions, capacity and lid
- Print files and proof requirements
- Carton packing and order quantity
- Destination market documentation
Common questions
Can I choose the base paper and coating independently?
Treat them as separate questions in the brief, then confirm which finished structures are available and suitable for the product and food application.
